Frank Lloyd Wright said it best, “I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” The Gleaner Spelling Bee consistently brings out these qualities in their champions; they are dedicated, hard working and possess an unremitting devotion to their dream.
In recognition of the significant contribution the Spelling Bee competition makes to our youth, National Commercial Bank of Jamaica Limited (NCB) is delighted to continue to support the initiative as it is one way to achieve a mutual goal of ‘Building a Better Jamaica’.
Focusing primarily on the Champion Boys, NCB has supported the Spelling Competition for over eight years. “NCB continues to align itself with various nation-building activities that will impact our future; but through Spelling Bee we specifically target the boys,” said Group Corporate Communications Manager, Belinda Williams. “We know our young boys are in need of our attention and support and so, through Spelling Bee, we want to encourage them to aim for the stars because when they do, they will be duly rewarded.”
Through NCB’s support, all Parish Spelling Bee Champion Boys are given a gift certificate of $7000 to open an NCB Start account. The overall Champion Boy and his coach receive another gift certificate, valuing $20,000 and $25,000 respectively, with the winning school being offered a computer donated by the NCB Foundation.
In addition, through partnership with Sangster’s Bookstore, NCB treats the top three boys to a special activity dubbed, ‘Sprint for Knowledge’, where they get to ‘sprint’ for various items at Sangster’s Bookstore, much to the boys’ delight.
The 54th staging of this renowned competition highlights the Gleaner Spelling Bee’s impact on youth development in Jamaica. NCB is pleased to support this competition as we work together to help Jamaican students attain their full potential.
