JEI is a commitment to building a better Jamaica through Education. One percent (1%) of all NCB Keycard purchases is contributed to the JEI in order to carry out the various programmes designed to advance the education agenda in Jamaica. The various accomplishments since its launch on May 20th, 2003 include:
NCB Story Time
Early reading promotes a higher degree of literacy amongst the nation's children. NCB employees have visited 26 basic schools in 5 parishes and read stories to over 2,322 children of ages 3-5 years.
Computer Donations
Over 600 computers were donated to schools, libraries and charitable organizations. These are being used to equip our young people with the fundamental technological skills they need to perform and communicate effectively in today's world.
CXC Sponsorship
- In the 2003/2004 Academic Year, students in 174 public and independent secondary schools had their exam fees for Principles of Accounts (POA) and Principles of Business (POB) paid at a total cost of $14, 361, 600.
- Examination Preparation Sessions were conducted by the NCB JEI Administrators for students in 12 schools across the island.
- Three regional seminars for teachers of POA and POB on critical areas of focus in marking the Examination papers were conducted.
- For 2004/2005, students in 184 schools were sponsored in these subjects at a cost of $15,202,000.
- In February 2005 a seminar for teachers POA and POB was held at the Conference Centre in Kingston, to brief the teachers on the common errors and difficulties that students often encounter while covering the syllabus and exam techniques. The presenters were experienced CXC markers.
Tertiary Scholarships
National Commercial Bank Jamaica Ltd., through the Jamaican Education Initiative (JEI) took another giant leap when it announced a $22 million scholarship programme that will benefit the students at the University of the West Indies, University of Technology and the Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts. One hundred and twenty three scholarships will be made available to students at U.W.I.; 60 at UTECH and 17 at the Edna Manley College, totaling 200 scholarships. The scholarships are for two years duration and are open to Jamaican students pursuing a first degree.

A total of seven grants have been provided to tertiary level students, while five have been offered
Music in Schools Series
The Arts not only brings a level of beauty in our lives they also engage both sides of our brains, ensuring that we are rounded individuals. Creative expression has long been used as a tool for social change. The JEI Music in School Series is aimed at exposing our young to an appreciation for music. Piano recitals have been held in Kingston basic and primary schools where children aged 3 to 10 years were exposed to classical music.
Teacher's Loan Programme
Over 2000 full time teachers received discounted loans amounting to $30 million.
Role Model Series
Between December 2003 and April 2005, NCB Executives visited their Alma Mater and shared with students, their experiences in advancing from students to accomplished professionals. These insights are aimed at providing students with a template for educational success.
