A Celebration of NCB People
 |
| National Commercial Bank Ja. Ltd. Chairman, Mr. Michael Lee Chin, presents veteran employee Kingsley Yapp, NCB’s Regional Manager, Middlesex and Portland with his award for 40 years of loyal service, during NCB’s 2008 Long Service Awards Ceremony held recently at the Hilton New Kingston Hotel. |
NCB’s three pillars of success – Innovation, Expertise and Strength aptly characterized the theme of the Institution’s 2008 celebration and presentation of its long service awards which was deemed a “Celebration of our People”. NCB’s Group Managing Director, Patrick Hylton set the pace in his opening remarks when he said, “Our challenge... is to be the best we can be so that our organization can accomplish its true potential. We have a responsibility to execute professionally and consistently in our respective roles. We have a responsibility to be role models and to nurture and develop talent within our organization so as to ensure its continued and perpetual success.”
NCB Chairman, Michael Lee Chin, main speaker at the event, in an inspired speech, heaped praises upon the awardees... “A Long Service Awards ceremony is a way of recognizing publicly the loyalty of staff members, but for the National Commercial Bank, it is more than that.” Mr. Lee Chin said. “It is a Celebration of our people – those NCB staff members absent and those present here today who have faithfully served National Commercial Bank cumulatively for over 3,230 years.”
Mr. Lee Chin acknowledged that while the Bank’s product is the provision of Financial Services, its strength resides in its employees, whom he said by their examples had prepared NCB to face future challenges.
To further emphasize the importance of lessons learned from the long-serving employees, Mr. Lee-Chin defined each letter of the word “Prepared”.
Perseverance: “40 years is an example of persevering.”
Respect: “You couldn’t have survived in a competitive organization, industry if you didn’t have respect,”
Education: “As the awards were being given you would have seen how many… starting from the mailroom ... propelled him or herself by virtue of continuous education… the passport, the equalizer in life, irrespective of where you come from;”
Performance: “If NCB wasn’t propelled by performance, shepherded by you, led by you, we would not be here today – performance leads to recognition;”
Aspiration: “Aspiration is the main fuel for progress… transforms ordinary people into extraordinary achievers... provides the mental and physical energy for people to convert plausible impossibilities into convincing possibilities”;
Role Models: “This is perhaps the most essential instrument to encourage youngsters, to demonstrate commitment, which you have demonstrated, and dedication towards any cause. Role models are powerful catalysts in raising confidence, enthusiasm and the energy level of an entire generation….This is national work.”;
Enduring value system: “…based on openness, honesty, integrity, meritocracy, fairness, transparency and excellence helps to raise our confidence and give us the courage to handle the tough situations with confidence – and sacrifices, therefore, become, easy and natural.”
Finally, Mr. Lee Chin defined D as Disciplined and Disciple, stating that the awardees were and continue to be the Institution’s best ambassadors.
“The reality of life is that there are inequities,” Mr. Lee-Chin said. “Those of us who have power in the marketplace, those of us who have a choice in the system, have a higher responsibility to make sure that we use our power in the marketplace and our voice in the system to minimize inequities.” This he added, was the basis for the mantra, NCB- Building a better Jamaica.
At the ceremony, some 37 staff members who had served between 25 and 40 years were awarded for their years of loyal service to the Institution. Another 160, were recognized at the Branch level for their contribution of 10 – 20 years of service.
Quoting Voltaire, Mr. Rickert Allen, Snr. General Manager Group Human Resources in his message said, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”
