The annual search for NCB Nation Builders begins
The annual awards, which are in their 6th year, are designed as a means of publicly rewarding local businesses for their entrepreneurial dynamism and their demonstrated dedication to the advancement of their communities and the nation at large.
Local entities and individuals have until August 9, 2013 to submit applications through NCB branch locations across the island. Application forms will also be available: www.jncb.com/businesses/sme/ncbnationbuilders.
This year, applicants will compete in five categories that focus on start-ups, women in business, innovation, vision and nation building. The vision category is for final year students majoring in Management or Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, who will get grant funding for their business proposals if they win. The fifth category is the coveted Nation Builder, which will be awarded to an established business with the most outstanding entrepreneurial performance that makes a clear and significant contribution to community development.
Eight (8) outstanding nominees will be selected by an independent panel of judges who will determine their eligibility to move on to the final phase of the process based on community impact, creativity and innovative thinking, strategic direction, commercial viability and a final presentation. All the nominees who get to this stage are already considered winners and will receive, courtesy of NCB and its partners, a combination of cash, products, training, scholarships, financial consultation and marketing support to boost their business growth.
In the history of the Nation Builder Awards, NCB has always found organizations that are only too willing to partner on the event and this year is no different. For 2013, RJR Communications Group, LIME, Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, the Jamaica Business Development Company, Heart Trust/NTA, Lions Club of New Kingston and the UWI Mona School of Business are among those who have pledged their support.
The final four (4) National winners along with the Vision Award recipient will be announced at the gala Banquet to be held on October 22, 2013, with one outstanding nominee selected for the coveted top prize and winner of the title of NCB’s Nation Builder 2013.
Last year, Canco Limited, owners of the popular Linstead Market Jamaica brand of products dominated the field of entrants, winning this top award. A leading producer and exporter of canned ackees and callaloo with 26 years of operating history, Canco was recognized by the judges for the successful reinvention of its brand which now offers unique canned soups, seasoned coconut milk, jams and chutneys, while simultaneously expanding its local distribution arm.
As noted by NCB Group Managing Director Patrick Hylton at last year’s awards, NCB has built a business model that facilitates, encourages, finances, develops, promotes and celebrates entities like Canco.
“At NCB, we take great pride and actively carry out our role in promoting the entrepreneurial spirit of our nation, and therefore at the heart of our Nation Builder Awards programme we celebrate our SMEs for ‘not only doing well, but doing good’,†said Mr. Hylton.
The launch of this year’s Nation Builder Awards also comes as the Bank intensifies this focus on the capacity-building of Jamaica’s small and medium business sector with the hosting of the landmark NCB/IDB SME Conference, June 21-23, 2013 at the Rose Hall Resort & Spa in Montego Bay, St James.
