Phishing Online Scam

As technology evolves, persons have become heavily reliant on its utility to define and direct their lifestyles. With this increased online usage, we have become more susceptible to instances of fraud/scamming and other threats of global concern.

Phishing (pronounced fishing) is one of the most common online scams.

Characteristics of a Phishing Email

• Appears to be coming from a legitimate organization through the use of corporate logos, colours, graphics, legal disclaimers etc
• Requests that receiver updates or confirms private/confidential details such as login information, account/credit card numbers, personal identification number (PIN) etc
• Suggests that there are dire consequences for not responding to the email
• Aims to persuade recipient to provide the requested information - Includes a link to an impersonated website

Here are some more tips to ensure your safety:

• Under no circumstance should you respond to an email that requests financial information or click on a link contained in the same email. - Never login to your bank website through a link in an email. Always type the web address in yourself. - Never use a public network to access your personal and financial details or for conducting monetary transactions.
