The National Commercial Bank (NCB), with a staff complement of over 2,400; was named Jamaica's employer of choice by the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF) at its last awards ceremony. NCB was named overall winner -- first place, employer of choice (large company category -- 500+ employees); and first place, highest employee satisfaction.

The JEF designation describes, among other things, companies where employees love to work. NCB was judged by employees using criteria such as learning opportunities, compensation, fringe benefits, profitability, career choice, treatment by management, health and safety, good corporate image and long-term goals.

Why is NCB a good place to work? At NCB, the well-being and welfare of our employees are important to us. Therefore, there are necessary policies in place that employees are guided by to ensure that their interests are protected. These polices include to name a few disciplinary policy, sexual harassment policy and the diversity policy.

We also provide a structurally led Corporate Learning Campus (CLC) which is registered as a tertiary institution by the University Council of Jamaica. Courses offered at the CLC are of value to employees equipping them with the necessary skills that will increase their knowledge base of the financial services industry. The campus is structured according to four schools of learning that are aligned to the organisation's business objectives. They are the School of Banking and Applications and Technology, School of Leadership and Organisational Development, School of Client Relationship Management, and the School of Wealth Management, Credit and Risk Management.

These courses are all influenced by learning councils which are comprised of subject matter experts so as to ensure alignment with our business objectives. There is also an e-campus which encompasses eLearning, e-library, e-books and e-mentor. Employees are able to access over 2,000 periodicals which can provide business and financial information.

In terms of compensation and benefits, NCB participates in salary surveys conducted by such organisations as PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Jamaica Employers' Federation which is led by three pillars -- attract, retain and motivate -- a philosophy that drives and determines our compensation strategy.

Our organisation is also fully guided by an occupational health and safety policy. We have a well-established wellness and recreational centre that staff can access without any cost. The organisation has also 170 wellness officers that are represented by employees and that are trained in CPR and first aid. The organisation works along with the Government and private health agencies such as the Ministry of Health, the Heart Foundation and the Jamaica Cancer Society who from time to time engage our staff on health issues and offer health services to staff.

There is also a wide array of opportunities for staff development. Our approach to the development of employees' learning capacity takes a next practice approach which entails improving the standard of learning and development for staff.

Employees across the NCB Group are provided with learning opportunities which are life-long and aid in enhancing their personal and professional development. In addition to our management trainee programme which received a post-graduate diploma accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica, the organisation is also seeking accreditation for our branch management programme and our Institute of Leadership and Organisational Development programme (ILOD). The organisation also has a partnership with the Mona School of Business, UWI (MSB) and the Jamaica Institute of Financial Services (JIFS) to facilitate executive level training through the Caribbean Executive Leadership Series.

Dynamic opportunities are made available for employees to develop themselves and become competitive in the work environment. Through the professional Development Plan (PDP); our employees are able to structure and chart their development using the available tools provided by the Bank, therefore equipping themselves with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their career.
