NCB Business Customer donates entire prize to hurricane-affected families
March 2, 2026 - Kingston: When Zewei Zheng won one million dollars, he did not hesitate. He gave it away.
The owner of the San San Haberdashery in St. Ann’s Bay who placed second in the promotion used his winnings to purchase food supplies for families still recovering from the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Upon learning that he had won, he simply shared, “Time hard for everybody. Nuff hungry people around. We luckier than plenty. We help dem.” His staff in earshot were not surprised.
With a practice of philanthropy that predates his arrival in Jamaica, Zheng proudly shared his certificates and trophies of appreciation that are neatly tucked away in his office. It is a constant reminder that his success does not only belong to him but also to the broader community.
At key times each year, such as back-to-school and Christmas, the businessman who made St. Ann’s Bay his home eleven years ago, is well known for the support he gives to the parents and students at Marcus Garvey Technical School and Priory Primary Schools.
This time the $1M prize extended that reach. This time through an employee who assisted with translation, we learnt that the items were distributed to the surrounding communities through the St.Ann Municipal Council.
The NCB Business Boost initiative offered prize winnings of $3.5M to merchants who used their NCB Visa Credit cards for transactions with a minimum value of $120,000.00.
“We are cognisant that recovery from the damage and disruption engendered by Melissa requires additional resources over the medium term. Our business card is an essential tool for cash flow management and more for SMEs. Activations such as NCB Business Boost offer a lifeline to many from whom much is being demanded in times like these, ” advised Acting Senior Vice President Payments and Channels, Danielle Cameron-Duncan.
“We have incentivised the use of our business credit card to the tune of $3.5M to support the needs of our SME clients. It is heartening, to see the award being going beyond the coffers of the business and being used as a catalyst for community strengthening," added Cameron Duncan. “Combined, the right resources with a strong and consistent customer base are the two key elements that keep our SMEs thriving and help us keep building a better Jamaica.”
